Island Cook Departs Next Level Chef with Praise from Gordon Ramsay
Next Level Chef contestant Ryan Scanlon, who first discovered his passion for cooking as a teenager at Alchemy in Edgartown, was eliminated from the reality cooking show on Thursday, but got commendations from the judges.
The Vineyard-raised chef cooked his way to the final six on Gordon Ramsay’s hit competition produced by FOX. He was competing in the professional category and vying for the $250,000 prize that comes with a year-long mentorship.
After preparing a filet mignon, with the bone still in, the judges determined it was overcooked. Mr. Scanlon said on the show that steaks are his expertise, but his comfortability with the filet was ultimately what hurt him.
“It’s just me getting in my own way which is crushing me,” Mr. Scanlon said before he headed into the elimination round.
Mr. Scanlon proceeded into a 25-minute cookoff against competitor Megan Keno. The challenge was to cook an entire fish, something ingrained in Mr. Scanlon, who as a teenager cooked many fish caught in Vineyard’s waters.

Gordon Ramsay‘s “Next Level Chef” has been renewed for Seasons 5 and 6, just two weeks after the fourth season of the cooking rivalry premiered on Fox.
Plus, the franchise is being extended with a holiday competition, “Next Level Baker,” which has been given the green light for Season 1. The spinoff, a four-hour special in total, will check the skills of bakers as they are tasked with creating festive holiday delights across the franchise’s three levels.
In “Next Level Chef,” cooks challenge across three different kitchens, “from the glistening top floor to the challenging bottom of the basement,” with ingredients matching each environment. The winning chef earns a $250,000 grand prize.
“Next Level Chef” airs Thursdays on Fox at 8 p.m. ET and streams the next day on Hulu. The series is executive produced by Ramsay and Matt Cahoon.

Details From The Set Of Next Level Chef, Straight From The Winner And Her Mentor Nyesha Arrington - Exclusive
Filming "Next Level Chef" was not only intense, but a demanding and exhausting process, according to chef Pyet DeSpain and her mentor on the show, Nyesha Arrington. Arrington told Mashed that the show filmed five days a week, with the days starting early.
Those long grueling days meant some kitchen mishaps were all but inevitable. Arrington and DeSpain confirmed as much, telling Mashed that the show didn't happen without a lot of cuts, scrapes, and fires along the way. DeSpain revealed, "There's a ton of finger cuts going on ... if they showed every cut that happened, [viewers] would be like, 'These people don't know how to f***ing cook,' but [in this situation], you're shaking and your nerves are everywhere and some of those knives are really, really sharp."
And if not cuts, there was a good chance of a fire in the "Next Level" kitchens, especially when chef Tricia [Wang] was competing. Gordon Ramsay is taking things up another level.
Fox has renewed his cooking show Next Level Chef for two more seasons. The deal brings the show through to Season 6.
In addition, the network is launching a spinoff – Next Level Baking – that will air as a four-part holiday special.
It’s not rare for Ramsay – one of Fox’s key talents with a number of shows on air – to receive a double order. In 2023, the network cooked up a two season order through Season 4, which is currently airing on Thursday nights at 8pm.
