Our next life
Changing the world with your funds doesn’t necessarily mean donating it all to charity — or even spending anything at all.
Just ask author and activist Tanja Hester. In her book Wallet Activism: How to Use Every Dollar You Spend, Earn, and Save as a Force for Change, Hester gives readers a roadmap for how to consider about the true impact their money has on the society. Everything from where you bank to where you work to your 401(k) plan and, yes, where you shop makes a difference.
“There are so many ways we can create change, and so many ways we own financial power,” she tells Money.
A former political consultant for linear causes, Hester became a star within the FIRE (Financial Self-determination, Retire Early) movement after retiring at age 38. She chronicled her journey towards early retirement on her blog, Our Next Life, and then wrote Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way as a guide for people looking to step away from their jobs and guide more purposeful lives.
Now, Hester is focused on a longtime passion: Teaching people how to produce sure their financial lives are aligned with their values. This isn’t a quick process;

I thought it was normal to hide in the back of a station wagon when my dad checked into a motel.
Growing up, the biggest vacation we took was to Disney World. We drove to Florida from Illinois and to save money he’d reserve a room with two double beds for two people. After he got the key me and my two sisters would sneak into the room so the manager wouldn’t see us. We’d pack a sleeping bag and one of us would sleep on the floor.
I didn’t feel poor as a kid, but in my early 20s I started realizing some people spent money way differently than I was taught. Like a buddy who’d spend $100 buying women shots, or my coworker who got a new luxury car every couple years.
I thought they were stupid, but it wasn’t long before I bought a BMW, dropped $200,000 on a condo, and started a new hobby flying airplanes.
I get emails all the time from people like Karen. She wrote:
